Hey everyone, its been a while since I blogged. I want to talk to you about the American Sniper. The film has being receiving flurry of praise and good word of mouth. So far the film has grossed 248 million in North America alone; and a further 70 million overseas. The films is perhaps on its way to surpass the war drama film: Saving Private Ryan. There are many elements of the film to assess, especially areas where the controversies mostly surround. Countless persons have chastised the film about the portrayal of Kyle, its ambition to distort the truth, and subtle manner in which it glorifies war. In some instance I agree with these persons whom have admonished the film, but some of them I believe might be exaggerating. But It all depends on which perspective you gauge the film, because different people will have differed opinions. Once we can accept this and honor it, the world would be a better place. However, we all attempt to impose our beliefs and ideologies on others in one way or another. Anyways, I digress. What I am trying to say is the American Sniper holistically captures Kyle's struggles and how he has to learn to endeavor throughout his campaign is inspiring. You truly feel that if Kyle can overcome these issues he has to contend with, so can you. The movie is unabashedly intense, emotional and incessantly delivers on the edge suspense. The problem is the film in some manner does lionize the concept of war; the movie is extremely violent. There are moments when Kyle subtly disregards the life of the Iraqi civilians as he eliminates them. It illustrate a scant disdain for the lives of these person as a result of not being wrapped in the American flag. Moreover the vile how these lives are snuffed like they are dogs and exhibiting on the big screen is immensely frightening. Though I love movies, I am not apt on seeing children being killed in such grotesque manner. This among other things somewhat derailed my interest in the film that I had to halt the film for a moment while i gather my composure. Regaining my sense of normalcy subsequent the stark shock, I began to playing the film again. Obviously the film is not for the faint of heart. But the film sort of demonstrate the cruel reality that transpires in an actual war-zone.
Also, American Sniper like its main character, has serious credibility issues. When a film is marketed as "based on the TRUE STORY", then effort is made to fictionalizes the content and fabricate the dialogue in order to portray an actual military figure in a more admirable light, then the filmmakers have crossed from portrayal into propaganda. In his own life Kyle boast about things that were not true. For example his tussle with Jesse Ventura. Although there are many discrepancy, American Sniper is profound on its own battleground, especially for those who have paid homage to their country by serving. But the movie intentionally disregards humanity outside the American sphere; a expression of exceptional-ism and jingoism; promoting the use of force and imperialism on the lives of others. American Sniper is exceptional, but is dwarfed by the ruthless execution of the lives and values of others.
