Batman V Superman Dominates The #1 Spot Again But Loses Its God Like Hold, Plunging 69.1% On April 1-3 2016 Box Office Weekend.
Batman V Superman dominates for a 2nd consecutive weekend, but loses its God like hold at the box office plunging to 69.1% to gross $51.3 million.
Batman V Superman‘s slide is the fifth largest for a film that opened north of $100 million, topped by the final Harry Potter film and three Twilight movies. Considering that Dawn of Justice was the only true blockbuster on the market, it’s safe to say that this isn’t the kind of holdover Warner Bros. was looking for.
Internationally, Batman v Superman added $85 million this weekend as its worldwide cume now climbs to$682.9 million. From a worldwide perspective, the film has already surpassed the entire global returns from films such as Man of Steel ($668m), Thor: The Dark World ($644.6m), Iron Man 2 ($623.9m) and Iron Man($585.2m) on the all-time list where it currently ranks #84. All that said, while it looked like the film might becomethe 25th to ever cross $1 billion worldwide, its chances at crossing that mark aren't looking so good any longer. Still, it isn’t all bad for the DCEU. Batman V Superman is now up to $261.4 million domestically and $682.8 million globally. Prior to its premiere, reports indicated that the film needed to bring in at least $800 million worldwide to turn a profit, and Zack Snyder’s latest should be able to reach that number. It also has an outside chance of joining the magic $1 billion club, but the odds of that are lower now than they were a couple weeks ago. However, there’s still a couple of weeks before The Jungle Book reaches theaters, so Batman V Superman relatively has the multiplex to itself for the time being. It needs to make around $317 million more to reach $1 billion – a tall task that many will be interested in keeping tabs on. Coming in second once again is Zootopia. The animated feature brought in $19.3 million as its domestic cume now sits over $275 million, well on its way to becoming only the tenth animated film to gross over $300 million at the domestic box office. Internationally the film added another $30 million as its worldwide cume currently sits at $786.9 million, ranking 56th on the all-time chart.
Opening in fourth is God’s Not Dead 2, which grossed $7.6 million during its first three days. It continued the trend of faith-based films performing fairly well at the box office, further establishing there’s a sizable audience for these projects. God’s Not Dead 2 had a production budget of just $5 million, so it should turn a nice profit for the studio.
Rounding out the top five is Miracles from Heaven, bringing in $7.2 million. The film is now up to $46.8 million for its Stateside run.
