Finding Dory Capsizes Independence Day: Resurgence To Dominate # 1 Spot For a 2nd Consecutive Week On June 24-26 Box Office Weekend
Independence Day: Resurgence capsizes against the massive tide of Finding Dory who dominates the #1 spot at the box office for a second weekend with a
The film only dipped 46%. fishing 72.9 In only 10 days, the Finding Nemo follow-up has hooked $286.6 million in the USA and $396.9 million worldwide.
"I'm not surprised that it did this well," says comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "It's been a go-to movie for everyone, and that's the magic of the Pixar brand. Having a Pixar movie in the summer mix is always good for business." Dory, which arrives 13 years after the Oscar-winning Nemo, has stayed afloat thanks to glowing reviews (94% positive on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes) and reactions from moviegoers (90% liked it). The movie follows regal blue tang fish Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) as she searches for her parents (Eugene Levy and Diane Keaton), and features new and returning voice talent including Ed O'Neill, Albert Brooks and Idris Elba. Debuting in second is Independence Day: Resurgence (read our review), which brought in $41.0 million in its first three days. The sequel was not done any favors by a generally negative reception, which certainly didn’t sell it as something that had to be seen in theaters. It’s true that certain audience members are nostalgic for the 1996 original – but that feeling only went so far in boosting the commercial prospects. As it turns out, the movies need to be fairly good in order to strike big at the box office. Resurgence joins Alice Through the Looking Glass and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows as the latest followup that crashed and burned.
Resurgence actually made less during its opening weekend domestically than the first Independence Day ($50.2 million), a startling development when one factors in 20 years of ticket price inflation and 3D premiums. The international box office has helped somewhat, as the film’s global total is $143 million. Given that the production budget (which doesn’t include marketing costs) was $165 million, a sequel to 1996 alien apocalypse blockbuster Independence Day starring Will Smith, was met with abysmal reactions from critics (33% positive reviews) and moviegoers (40% liked it). Fox will probably get their money back, but it doesn’t appear as if the profits will be all that substantial. Whether or not Independence Day 3 happens remains to be seen. In third place, action comedy Central Intelligence steathily pocketed $18.2 million in its second weekend. The CIA caper starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart has earned $69.3 million in 10 days — trailing Johnson's surprise hit San Andreas last summer (which made $98.5 million in two weeks), but coming in higher than Hart's Ride Along 2 ($58.6 million in two weeks) earlier this year.
Outside of The Top Five: The Civil War drama starring Matthew McConaughey made just $7.5 million in its opening weekend, hardly the start STX was hoping for with their counter-programming option.handcuffed by poor reviews, which painted it more as a history lesson than a compelling dramatic work. That certainly didn’t help a movie that already had a limited target audience. This one is about to fall off by the wayside as the summer moves along.
