J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon In Justice League Film
Following the recent news that none other than the former J. Jonah Jameson himself, J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), will be stepping into the shoes of Commissioner Gordon of the Gotham City Police Department in yet another seminal comic book character set for further reinvention on the big screen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League Part One, anticipation for Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice have ridden just a little higher. Given Simmons’ inarguable presence and gravitas lent to the role of the Daily Bugle’s editor-in-chief in Sam Raimi’s original Spiderman trilogy of the 2000s, the idea of the actor lending his talent to the role of Gordon within the newly founded DC Extended Universe is enticing to say the least.
All eyes are undoubtedly on the much anticipated showdown between Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman for now, though seeing as how fans of the classic superhero characters are also eager to see where Gal Gadot will take Wonder Woman with Batman V Superman, some viewers might already be looking forward to Simmons’ take on Gordon and what his appearance will be in the first Justice League movie. Thankfully for the latter, an original piece of artwork meant to depict the potential Gordon set to arrive on the big screen next has been unveiled. Coming exclusively from independent artist Boss Logic and made for Comic Book, this latest bit of a potential teaser for things yet to come in Snyder’s sprawling DC Extended Universe hints at a much older Gordon to match Affleck’s similarly battle-hardened veteran vigilante. The image seen below depicts Simmons with a shock of grey hair and mustache, standing against an out of focus GCPD insignia in the background, and bearing all of the collected authority that Gordon has come to stand for over the years (on both the silver screen and the comic book panel).
Whether or not Simmons will be able to outdo Gary Oldman, who brilliantly brought the character to life in Christopher Nolan’s psychologically taut and emotionally wrought Dark Knight Trilogy remains to be seen, but if Snyder’s take on the character matches Boss Logic’s original character design, then Simmons might just find himself filling out the character with all of the finesse and gravitas required of him. And with an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor under his belt, Simmons should have no trouble finding his groove in an entirely new world of superheroes and masked vigilantes. Following the release of Batman V Superman later this month, viewers can expect to see the likes of Simmons as Gordon in Justice League Part One, and begin to anticipate the broadening expanse of the DC Extended Universe in kind. It remains to be seen whether or not Snyder will be able to pull off all he has set before him, but here’s to hoping that the blockbuster director may still have a few tricks left up his sleeve.
