How Does Batman v Superman Lead Into Justice League
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s first real attempt at building a larger shared cinematic universe. While Man of Steel was the first movie to feature Henry Cavill as Superman, Batman v Superman will really open up the world for more superhero hi-jinks.
Considering that Marvel Studios is DC’s chief rival when it comes to the superhero genre, (for better or worse) whatever Warner Bros. does with Batman v Superman will automatically be compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, namely when it comes to setting up future films with post-credits sequences. So how might Batman v Superman lead into Justice League Part One if not also via a sequence during (or at the end of) its end credits? As reported on Heroic Hollywood, Batman v Superman would not have a “traditional” post-credits sequence like the Marvel Studio movies, but rather it might have a montage of action beats to set up DC’s big team up movie. HH suggest that Batman v Superman might have a closing credits montage just like the opening credits montage from Watchman, which is another comic book film adaptation done by director Zack Snyder. According to El Mayimbe from HH: “The closing credits on Batman v Superman will consist of a montage sequence reminiscent of what Zack Snyder did with the opening credits on Watchmen… the montage gave us the history of The Minutemen and set the tone of the world of Watchmen. Using this technique as a closing credits montage to set up The Justice League is a stroke of brilliance. It worked for The Minutemen and can work for The Justice League. Using this technique, Warners avoids the comparisons to Marvel in the event they wanted to use a post-credit scene.” Warner Bros has the luxury of releasing another movie before Justice League Part One with Wonder Woman, which comes out five months earlier in 2017. So it’s likely there will indeed be more set up before the big superhero team up movie. Snyder didn’t include a post-credit sequence at the end of Man of Steel, so maybe he won’t do one for Batman v Superman either – though, now that the DC Extended Universe is being planned further out ahead, maybe he will after all.
Take this one with a grain of salt, for the time being. While it’s likely that Batman v Superman will set up future installments, it’s unclear if the superhero movie would end with a closing credits montage, as described by HH. It seems there’s enough “table setting” in Batman v Superman itself with its subtitleDawn of Justice and the inclusion of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the supervillain Doomsday. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see exactly how WB/DC goes about building this inter-connected cinematic universe (and how their approach compares to Marvel, naturally).
