RACING TO THE # 1 SPOT, FAST & FURIOUS 7 DOMINATES WITH ASTOUNDING RECORD on Box Office Weekend of April 3-5
Demolishing all competitors and expectation, 'Fast and Furious 7' raced to the number 1 spot with a smashing $147 Million in its first three days opening. The seven installment in the franchise shift into high gear with 67 million on its opening day, kicking off summer box office with a massive hit.
The film opened in 4004 theater and it’s the first film to have a $100 million-plus debut in April, according to Rentrak—destroying Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which previously held the April record with its $95 million opening in 2014. It just had the ninth biggest opening weekend, right behind Spider-Man 3’s $151.1 million 2007 debut. The opening weekend crowd was impressively diverse, a testament to a series that has drawn strength from its multicultural cast. The audience was 51% male, 44% under age 25, 37% Hispanic, 25% Caucasian, 24% African-American and 10% Asian. With an A CinemaScore and strong reviews, 'Furious 7' could be one of the few modern blockbusters that hangs around for more than a few weeks. The month of April is lean on blockbuster fare, and “Furious 7″ won’t get serious competition until “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” debuts on May 1. Internationally, the film rolled out across 10,500 screens in 63 territories, earning $240.4 million, bringing its overall worldwide total to $384 million “This is the next member of the billion-dollar club, and that’s a rarefied place to be,” said Contrino. “This thing is on fire.” Last weekend’s box office champion,DreamWorks Animation’s 'Home' showed impressive stamina shifting to #2 spot. The animated tale picked up $27.4 million in its sophomore frame, pushing its domestic total to $95.6 million. 'Home' dropped around 48 percent this weekend. This is a good sign: The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, another family-friendly animated film that came out earlier this year, also dropped around the same amount between its first and second weekends—and it’s gone on to make $160.8 million since its Feb. 6 debut. If this is any indicator of Home’s future performance, the Dreamworks film has a completely profitable future ahead
Gripping onto the #3 spot'Get Hard' with $13.1 million, accumulating 57 million in its ten day total.
Maintaining its hold on the 4th place positioning 'Cinderella' grabs $10.3 million, slipping 39.6% to bring its north america total to $167 million. This no doubt indicate audience interest in classic fairytale. Slipping down two spot to close out the top 5, 'Insurgent' rakes $10 million. So far the film ha grossed $103 million in total. Other newcomers, 'Woman in Gold,' a drama about the fight to recover art stolen by the Nazis picked up $2 million from 258 locations and will expand to between 800 and 1,000 venues this coming weekend. “The film is definitely poised for a long, long run,” said Erik Lomis, the studio’s distribution chief. “That’s a really solid start.” Thanks to “Furious 7,” the overall box office reached $218 million, marking the first time that ticket sales have crossed $200 million over the Easter weekend. “These huge results jump start momentum for the blockbuster summer season, suggesting that 2015 is shaping up to be everything (and maybe even more) that the industry has been hoping for,” said Greg Foster, CEO of Imax Entertainment.
